ASUU and FG to meet again today 4-10-2020

The Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will hold a meeting today in Abuja, in furtherance of deliberations to call off the ongoing ASUU strike and the resumption of full academic activities.

ASUU President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi who confirmed the development on Tuesday, explained that the meeting was in continuation of series of meetings that have been held with government representatives in the past.

The leadership of the union had earlier maintained that they have five major issues that led to the withdrawal of their services few months ago, but the major concern is the adoption of the University Transparency Account System (UTAS) for the personnel management of its members.

He said: “After our last meeting with Government representatives, we collectively agreed that I should return to my people to update them on the resolutions. I have been doing that since the last time we met with the government.

“So, all the parties involved have agreed to return to the dialogue table on Wednesday to continue discussions and search for durable labour peace in the University system. That’s the much I can say for now.”

Prof. Ogunyemi, however, maintained that the decision to call off the strike is dependent on the outcome of the meeting.

WAEC Debunks Rumour On Cancellation of 2020 May/June SSCE and Refund of Fees

WAEC Debunks Rumour On Cancellation of 2020 May/June SSCE

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC)  has debunked the rumours on cancellation of the May/June 2020 West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination, 2020 (WASSCE). In a statement by the Head of WAEC, Nigeria, Mr Patrick Areghan, on Sunday, the body explained that a notice alleging the cancellation of 2020 WASSCE did not emanate from the council but the handwork of mischief makers and consequently, false and misleading.

The statement reads, “Our attention has been drawn to a fake publication circulating in the social media, to the effect that the WAEC has cancelled the conduct of the WASSCE for School Candidates, 2020, as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic and was, therefore, set to refund N22,500 to candidates who had enrolled for the examination.

”The publication is patently false and deceitful.
” It is nothing but the handiwork of mischief makers who are out to defraud innocent and unsuspecting candidates and their parents/guardians.
”This piece of news is certainly not from the WAEC. It falls short of the council’s style, language and factual details. They got it all wrong.
“To begin with, the fee for the examination is N13,950 only and not N22,500.
”WAEC, as an examining body in the sub-region, has not announced the cancellation of the examination.
”It only announced a postponement until normalcy is restored. WAEC couldn’t have made a mistake in the full meaning of its acronym.
”We wish to use this opportunity to reassure all registered candidates, schools and other stakeholders that once the situation returns to normal, the council will come up with a new International Timetable for the conduct of the examination in the West African sub-region.
”This will take effect after due consultations with relevant stakeholders. Candidates are, therefore, advised to disregard the publication and concentrate on studying hard for the examination.”

NIN Application Guidelines and Requirements for Prospective UTME 2020 Candidates

As announced by JAMB earlier, registration for 2020 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) can only be possible for candidates that have registered and obtained their NINs. This implies that any candidate that has not registered for NIN will not be allowed to register for UTME.

In view of this, we deem it necessary to provide prospective UTME candidates with the guidelines to register and obtain their NIN before the 2020 UTME registration begins as the registration is expected to commence soon. 2020 UTME Candidates are equally advised to start preparing for their exams using the JAMB CBT softwares and JAMB CBT app

What is NIN?
NIN simply means National Identification Number. It consists of 11 non- intelligible numbers randomly chosen and assigned to an individual after the completion of enrolment into the National Identity Database (NIDB).
Once a NIN is assigned to an individual, it can never be reassigned, given or used by another person – that makes it unique in nature. In the case of the demise of an individual, his/her NIN is retired once a death certificate is presented to the Commission and the individual’s death is established.
The NIN is used to tie all records about an individual in the database and is also used to establish or verify his/her identity. All citizens and legal residents in Nigeria, from age zero (birth) and above are eligible to enrol for their NINs.

ASUU has suspended planned strike Over IPPIS

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has disclosed that the proposed strike over the directive of the  Federal Government  to enrol its members into the Integrated Payroll Personnel Information System has been suspended

We earlier reported that the ASUU members planned to embark on strike this November if the Federal Government withholds October Salaries over the issue of IPPIS
According to the President of ASUU, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, in a phone interview, the union had decided to maintain status quo, pending further meetings.
He mentioned that the Senate has intervened in the matter and the union are engaging the Senate and the union has received assurance from  the Senate that ASUU members will be paid when other workers are paid
He added that the union is proposing another template which would factor in the peculiarities of the universities and promote their interest.
“The point we are making is that we have visited the Senate President, told him that there is an alternative to IPPIS, the IPPIS as we see it, will not promote the interest of the university, there is no university or country in the world where the payment of university workers is centralised with the government.”
On the World University ranking, Ogunyemi stressed that enrolling its members would affect Nigeria’s status, and discourage visiting lecturers to come into the system.

“IPPIS will affect our ranking, because now scholars from different parts of the world will not be encouraged to come to Nigeria.
