ASUU Strike Update Day 19: ASUU Vows To Continue Strike Until FG Agrees To Its Demands

ASUU Strike Update Day 19: ASUU Vows To Continue Strike Until FG Agrees To Its Demands

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, yesterday, vowed to continue the ongoing strike until the Federal Government meets or agree to meet all its demands. Reacting to a comment by the Minister of Labour and productivity, Dr Chris Ngige, that the strike action by the union is political, the Chairman, of ASUU University of Ibadan, Chapter Dr Deji Omole, clarified that the strike was declared over alleged failure of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration to fulfil the content of the Memorandum of Action it signed with the Union in 2017.
The contents of the MOU bordered on revatilisation and funding of universities, unpaid accumulated earned academic earned allowances, release of University staff pension company license among other issues. While speaking with newsmen in Ibadan after the congress of the union.
ASUU Strike Update Day 19: ASUU Vows To Continue Strike Until FG Agrees To Its Demands
Omole, said: “How can our strike be political when there are matters that you as government signed and yet failed to fulfil? To us, it is the Federal Government that is being political with the truth by becoming untrustworthy.
“How can the President and his Vice be asking Nigerian universities to become one of the leading universities of the world without making the same commitments responsive and responsible governments in the world are making to education? Our leadership has shown consistent disrespect for agreements and this is why they can no longer be trusted by our union.”

ASUU Strike Update Day 12: Strike Continues As Meeting With FG Ends In Deadlock

ASUU Strike Update Day 12: Strike Continues As Meeting With FG Ends In Deadlock

Indications show that the ASUU strike action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will still continue for a while as the meeting, held yesterday, with the Federal Government ended in a deadlock. No compromise or decision was reached after the meeting to end the ASUU Strike, which began 3 p.m and ended 8:15 p.m on Tuesday. The meeting will continue next week.
The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, however stated that government’s discussion with ASUU will continue next week. According to Ngige the delay in calling ASUU for a discussion was caused by the mimimum wage negotiation.
ASUU Strike Update Day 12: Strike Continues As Meeting With FG Ends In Deadlock
He appealed to ASUU to put the interest of students, who are at the receiving end into consideration.
ASUU president, Biodun Ogunyemi on the other hand said the union have tendered its request at the meeting and also confirmed that the ASUU Strike meeting has been adjourned till next week.
According to him, no date has been fixed but “we will communicate the date to you tomorrow,” he told newsmen.
He said the union was forced to embark on the strike after its plea for the implementation of the 2009 agreement fell on deaf ears.
Mr Ogunyemi earlier said the government had promised to take action on issues raised in the last MOU signed by the two parties but “it does appears that federal government is dribbling the union.”

ASUU Strike Update Day 11: FG Holds Meeting With ASUU Today

ASUU Strike Update Day 11: FG Holds Meeting With ASUU Today

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will today hold a crucial meeting with the Federal Government to over the ongoing strike action by the union. The meeting is scheduled for 1 p.m., and was called at the instance of the Minister of education, Adamu Adamu, and the government’s negotiating team.
The president of ASUU Biodun Ogunyemi confirmed that the FG has invited the union to a meeting adding that the meeting will determine the seriousness of the Federal Government towards ending the strike.
ASUU Strike Update Day 11: FG Holds Meeting With ASUU Today
“The government has invited us for a meeting tomorrow, we are not sure of their seriousness because we have been discussing with them for 16 months without any result,” he said.
On whether the lecturers will be willing to call off the strike if the meeting ends in their favour, the ASUU president said the union members will decide on that.
He also denied rumours that the lecturers have accepted government’s proposal to set up an education bank, which was one of the reasons they went on strike in the first place.
“We have not accepted education banking. We were surprised on reports that we accepted it. It is a means to exploit students and make them pay tuition fee.
“Some students do not get jobs even five years after graduation and they will be asked to repay a million naira. That is selling them to slavery totally,” he said.

ASUU Strike Update Day 8: FG Yet To Initiate Any Form Of Negotiation

ASUU Strike Update Day 8: FG Yet To Initiate Any Form Of Negotiation

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has disclosed that the federal government is yet to invite the union to any form of negotiation towards resolving the strike. This was revealed by the president of the union, Biodun Ogunyem in a telephone chat with news men. Mr Ogunyemi said the union has placed a memorandum before the government on how universities can be funded, but nothing has been done on it.
Concerning the compliance of its members to the strike action so far, Mr Ogunyemi said “Our members remain resolute and report we are getting from branches indicate that our members are determined. Government cannot continue to handle education with levity which is the focus for the development of any country. We cannot continue to pretend that we have education when our universities are in terrible condition.” .
ASUU Strike Update Day 8: FG Yet To Initiate Any Form Of Negotiation
“We have report of one or two crisis where the vice chancellors are trying to give us problems. Like Adekunle Ajasin University, the VC threatened to sack our members and we tried to tell him to go ask from history,” he said.
Efforts to get the education and labour ministries to speak on why no negotiation has started since the strike begun were unsuccessful.

ASUU Strike Update Day 3: Senate Makes Move To End ASUU Strike

ASUU Strike Update Day 3: Senate Makes Move To End ASUU Strike

Report has it that the Nigerian Sentae is currently making efforts to ensure the ASUU strike is called off for the overall interest of the nation’s education sector and the Nigerian students. The Senate had on Tusday manadated the Chairman, Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND, Senator Jibrin Barau, APC, Kano North, to immediately initiate a meeting with the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu and the leadership of ASUU to have a common ground to resolving the matter.
This followed a point of Order raised by the Senate Leader, Senator Ahmad Lawan, All Progressives Congress, APC, Yobe North Speaking Senator Lawan who noted that the strike would have had dire consequences on Nigeria.
ASUU Strike Update Day 3: Senate Makes Move To End ASUU Strike
"I want to urge ASUU (Academic Staff Union of Universities) to suspend the strike they started two days ago. Our universities are already late in some of the cases of resumption. So, there is the need for the government particularly the Federal Ministry of Education and ASUU to dialogue like the NLC and TUC did with the Federal Government, so that our students will remain in our universities.
“One of the reasons why many people, if they can afford it, send their wards outside of Nigeria is the unpredictability of terms (semesters), when our universities could easily be shut." The Senator emphasised.
